In an email to the Penn community on March 13, 2025, the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania announced that they had voted to extend J. Larry Jameson’s term to June 30, 2027. Jameson accepted an appointment as Interim President in December of 2023 following the resignation of Liz Magill. Jameson previously served as the Perelman School of Medicine Dean, a role he held for over a decade.

The message noted that the “challenges facing higher education today are among the most significant ever encountered by American universities” and in “such a moment, there is nothing more important than leadership.” It also highlighted Jameson’s academic accomplishments relating to medicine and his achievements as Interim President including announcing Penn’s move to institutional neutrality, the creation of the Draw Down the Lightening Grants, and establishing the Office of Religious and Ethnic Interests (Title VI).

Jameson was quoted in the email as saying that he was “deeply honored by this vote of confidence from our Board of Trustees” and that he would continue the vital work of the University and prioritize “our core values of excellence, freedom of inquiry and expression, and respect.”
