Earlier today, the Penn Graduate School of Education experienced a cybersecurity breach, where an unknown body sent a series of mass emails via the email addresses of several GSE faculty members and the official GSE School Leadership Program. The message was sent to students, faculty, parents, and alumni of the university.
All the emails contained the same text, which criticized the university primarily for its security and admissions practices.
“We have terrible security practices and are completely unmeritocratic. We hire and admit morons because we love legacies, donors, and unqualified affirmative action admits.”
It further requested that donors cease all monetary contributions to Penn.
A message was released to all undergraduates of the university shortly after the incident. The email informed students that the Office of Information Security is currently investigating this breach while the Incident Response team is “actively addressing it.”
Penn GSE has issued a statement condemning the message as well as the derogatory language used in the body of the email.
“All of the emails are incredibly offensive and in no way reflective of Penn or Penn GSE’s mission or values. We sincerely apologize for the harm this has caused and is causing.”
